مؤسس إمبراطورية كنتاكي هو هارلاند ساندرز، المعروف أيضًا باسم الكولونيل ساندرز. ولد في 9 سبتمبر 1890 في إنديانا، الولايات المتحدة. كان ساندرز رجل أعمال ومستثمرًا أمريكيًا أسس سلسلة مطاعم كنتاكي فرايد تشيكن.
نشأ ساندرز في مزرعة في إنديانا، وعمل في العديد من الوظائف المختلفة في حياته المبكرة، بما في ذلك عامل سكة حديد وسائق قطار وموظف تأمين ومالك محطة وقود. في عام 1930، افتتح ساندرز مطعمًا في كوبر هيل، كنتاكي. كان الدجاج المقلي الخاص به شائعًا للغاية، وسرعان ما أصبح مطعمه وجهة شهيرة للمسافرين.

توفي ساندرز في 16 ديسمبر 1980 عن عمر يناهز 89 عامًا. كان شخصية مؤثرة في صناعة المطاعم، ويعتبر مؤسسًا لسلسلة مطاعم كنتاكي فرايد تشيكن، التي تعد اليوم واحدة من أكبر سلاسل المطاعم في العالم.
