النحل لا يشرب الماء كما يفعل الإنسان، بل يستخدمونه لتبريد الخلية وترطيب الشمع ولتحلية العسل. ولكن في بعض الحالات، يحتاج النحل إلى الماء لتخفيف لزوجة العسل وجعله أسهل في التدفق والتخزين.
لذلك، تقوم النحل بجمع الماء من مصادر مختلفة مثل المستنقعات والأنهار والزهور وحتى الندى في الصباح الباكر، ويتم جمع الماء في جيوب صغيرة على ساقي النحلة الخلفيتين. وعندما تعود النحلة إلى الخلية، يتم تسليم الماء إلى نحلة أخرى تعمل في الخلية، والتي تقوم بتخزين الماء في أماكن محددة في الخلية.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يمكن للنحل العمال استخدام الرذاذ الناتج عن تبخير الماء في الخلية لتبريد الخلية في الأيام الحارة. ويمكن أن يتم جمع الرذاذ هذا عن طريق تبخير قطرات الماء التي تم جمعها في الخلية باستخدام الحرارة الناتجة عن حركة النحل داخل الخلية.
