كلمة مستشفى مذكر، ويقصد بها مكان الاستشفاء. يستشفِي مستشفَى على وزن مستفعَل فالألف المقصورة هنا هي من أصل الكلمة (شفَى) وليست ألف التأنيث المقصورة. ولكن يجوز تأنيثها بمعنى دار الاستشفاء. فالتذكير هو الأصل، والتأنيث جائز
